  primordial series

The Primordial series is a group of paintings started in November 2006. The imagery in the series comes from two main sources: the fossil record and the biomorphs of the Surrealists. I became interested in fossils in college after being exposed to Steven J. Gould's book, "Wonderful Life", all about the Burgess Shale. Since then, I’ve played with images of fossils in other media: ceramics and jewelry, and now paint. Fossils remind me of the biomorphs of the Surrealists since both suggest an enigmatic living form. Some images of the paintings are very obviously from fossils and more literal: trilobites, ammonites; and some are based on various sea creatures and are more like biomorphs.
